2013 2013 Smith Madrone Spring Mountain Riesling 93 Points, Editor's Choice, Wine Enthusiast
Smith Madrone consistently makes one of the finest Rieslings in all of Napa Valley, and the 2013 effort may very well be their best effort ever. The wine is profound, and produced from 41 year old Riesling vines at the top of Spring Mountain. The wine features a depth and structure that is second to none in the Valley. Our only disappointment came when we learned that Smith Madrone has only 6.25 acres on Spring Mountain planted with the Riesling grape, as this is wine that deserves to be known the world over.
RATINGS & REVIEWS
93 Points, Editor's Choice, Wine Enthusiast From 41-year-old vines on just over five estate acres, this is resiny and briny on the nose. A honey-laced creaminess at the core is tensely accentuated by vibrant acidity. Balanced and elegant, with a sunny bite of ripeness, it revels in nuances of fresh and dried apricot while lighter notes of lemon, lime and grapefruit play backup. Wine Enthusiast, May 2015
FROM THE WINERY
The aroma of the 2013 Riesling reveals a core of minerality surrounded by stone fruit, lime and white peaches, with a hint of grapefruit and apricot lurking around the edges. On the palate there is a distinct flavor of honeydew melon, sprinkled lightly with lemons and limes and a touch of honeysuckle and apricot. All of this complexity results in a distinctive Riesling character which merges at the finish with a lip-smacking acidity, leaving the taster wanting more. And more. It is completely refreshing and absolutely delicious. Like our other vintages and a testament to our mountain vineyard, this wine which will age and improve for 15 to 20 years.
